Donald Trump: Better Trade Deals Could Eliminate $19 Trillion U.S. Debt in 8 years

GOP frontrunner Donald Trump said he would wipe out the United States debt in just eight years.

The real estate mogul told the Washington Post he could clear the $19 trillion debt “over a period of eight years,” and suggested that “renegotiating all of our deals” would grow the economy and help cut down the debt.

“The power is trade. Our deals are so bad,” Trump explained. “I would immediately start renegotiating our trade deals with Mexico, China, Japan and all of these countries that are just absolutely destroying us.”

But economists suggest a trade war would immobilize the economy and that it is impossible to clear the $19 trillion debt in eight years, the Washington Post reported. “It could require using $2 trillion a year from the annual $4 trillion budget to pay off holders of the debt,” notes The Hill.
