President Obama will appear on the upcoming Fox News Sunday with Chris Wallace, the White House confirmed today.

Speaking to reporters, White House press Secretary Josh Earnest said that the interview would be taped at the University of Chicago, where the president would travel tomorrow to talk about his nomination to the Supreme Court.

“The president is looking forward to it and I think any time that the president is doing an interview with a television program that he hasn’t done an interview with for a while, it’s an opportunity to reach to a new audience,” he said. “Or at least an audience that may not have heard from the president directly in a while.”

Earnest admitted that it had been a long time since Obama appeared on the program.

“It’s the first time that the president has appeared on that program as president of the United States,” he said.

He added that it was a “good opportunity” for the White House to make its case directly to Fox News viewers about the need for the Senate to confirm his Supreme Court nomination.

“Mr. Wallace has a well established reputation for asking tough questions so I don’t think anyone is expecting a softball here,” he said. He added that Obama was looking forward to a “thoughtful and serious” conversation about the issues facing the country.

According to Fox, the interview coincides with the 20th anniversary of Fox News Sunday, which launched April 28, 1996.
