Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton criticized presumptive Donald Trump for visiting his golf courses in Scotland after the historic Brexit vote, arguing that the world needed steady leadership instead.
“We’ve got to be clear about this,” she said. “No one should be confused about America’s commitment to Europe – not an autocrat in the Kremlin, not a presidential candidate on a Scottish golf course.”
Clinton made her remarks at the United States Conference of Mayors as President Barack Obama was golfing at the Woodmont Country Club in Rockville, Md.
On Friday, Obama mocked Trump for visiting his golf course during the vote.
Clinton also appeared sympathetic to Wall Street after the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell some 600 points in response the Brexit vote.
“In the day after the vote, Americans lost $100 billion from our 401(k)s,” she said, although she appeared confident that the market would “bounce back.”
“Our priority now must be to protect American families and businesses from the negative effects of this kind of tumult and uncertainty,” she said. “And that’s why steady, experienced leadership is so important at times like these.”
Clinton said that although the United States and the United Kingdom were different, she admitted that there was a common frustration by citizens of both countries.
“I’ve seen it, I’ve heard it, I know it,” she said. “That’s why I’ve worked hard to find solutions to the economic challenges we face.”
She referenced her plan to create more jobs through higher taxes and more government spending and a commitment to raise the minimum wage as a solution.
“People across America know that they don’t want empty promises, they want solutions,” she said. “And that is what, working with you, I hope to offer to them.”
