Former Pennsylvania Republican Senator and two-time presidential candidate Rick Santorum says that the path to the White House goes through his state, and Donald Trump can clinch a victory there by focusing on trade and immigration.
“We have a candidate who, maybe in an odd way, actually represents the best chance for values voters to topple the elite mantra that’s moving our culture down into a cultural cesspool,” Santorum told Breitbart News Washington editor Matthew Boyle at the Value Voters Summit.
Donald Trump understands elitism is the core problem here… He has obviously taken on the issue of trade and immigration, and obviously understands the Supreme Court, which is the elite institution of our government, are the central problems that are disadvantaging millions and millions of Americans who are feeling left behind by our country.
No group feels more left behind, more alienated by the elite institutions… than social conservatives. And Trump, while he may not be one of us — I think he referred to “us” as “they” in his speech — he certainly understands that elitism has gotten us where we are, and the Court is a big problem.”
The leftist press isn’t used to being called out by Trump, Santorum said.
Republicans have “all played nice” with the leftist press, even though it “hammered” every Republican. “They took John McCain, who is clearly a moderate Republican, and turned him into Attila the Hun, just because they could. They haven’t been fair, and they haven’t been accurate, and they’re partisan. Trump has called them on it. And it’s driving them crazy, because they’re being exposed for what they are.”
Santorum, who launched his presidential campaign from a factory floor, stated Trump will easily win the election if he focuses on trade and immigration policies that benefit Americans. “I’m very excited,” he said. “He’s got on message, he’s stayed on message, and you’re seeing the impact in the polls. It’s gonna work. I think Trump’s gonna win this election if he continues to do what he’s been doing here the last few weeks.”
Pennsylvania is a must-win state for Trump, the former senator added.
“I think it’s critical for Trump. I don’t know how he gets to 270 [electoral votes] without Pennsylvania in that mix,” he said,” adding Trump can “absolutely” win the Keystone State.
I have no doubt about it. If he stays on the message, and stops using Twitter as a schoolyard brawl place, and just focuses on the issues and what he’s going to do to help make America a great country again, if that’s his message between now and Election Day, he’ll be our next president. And he’ll win Pennsylvania.
