Black, Armed, and ‘Feminist’: College Student Calls Gun Ownership ‘Empowerment’

Breitbart News highlighted Antonia Okafor’s National Rifle Association (NRA) ad in which she stressed the pressure that she, as a young black woman, had to overcome in choosing to arm herself for self-defense and take her stand as part of “freedom’s safest place.” Okafor has elaborated by equating gun ownership with feminism.

Okafor expounded by explaining her belief that gun ownership levels the playing field for women–that it is an example of “true feminism.”

Okafor lives in Texas, where she is the Southwest regional director for Students for Concealed Carry and will be entering law school next year.

Asked why she stands for gun rights amid the name-calling and insults, Okafor told The Daily Signal, “We see ourselves as doing this as a means of empowerment. Real feminism is about empowerment and taking our safety into our own hands.”

The NRA’s Catherine Mortensen echoed her words, stressing that restrictions on self-defense simply open the door to crime waves like those in Chicago and Baltimore. Mortensen made the point that dangers were especially heightened in gun-free locations, saying, “Americans have seen the government can’t always protect them—from the terrorist attack in San Bernardino to the shooting in Orlando.” She stressed that the NRA is fighting for Americans’ right to self-defense and that the fight is for “everyone, regardless of race, religion, or sexual orientation.”
