On Monday the timeline for the Las Vegas attack changed as Sheriff Joe Lombardo told reporters that Stephen Paddock shot security guard Jesus Campos before opening fire on crowd.
Lombardo previously indicated that the security guard was shot once the attack was under way.
According to the AP, Campos went to Paddock’s room in response to reports of an “open door.” While checking the door he discovered that Paddock “was drilling to an adjacent wall” and Paddock then shot and wounded Campos six minutes before the attack began.
Business Insider reports that police were inside the hotel, searching the 31st floor within seven minutes of the attack’s start. Five minutes later they were on the 32nd floor, discovered Campos, and knew the the attack was coming from room 135. However, “it would be almost another hour, however, until officers would break into Paddock’s room.”
The actual attack lasted “nine to 11 minutes.” As it wound down, officers were clearing hotel occupants from the 32nd floor.
Newsweek reports that officers on Paddock’s floor asked to make entrance but were told to wait until SWAT arrived.
SWAT entered Paddock’s room at approximately 11:20 pm, which was roughly 65 minutes after Paddock stopped shooting. When they entered they discovered Paddock was dead from an self-inflicted gunshot wound.
At 11:58 pm Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department announced that the gunman was down:
Confirming that one suspect is down. This is an active investigation. Again, please do not head down to the Strip at this time.
