Santorum Gets It Right: Obama Appeases 'Forces of Evil'

After yesterday’s campaign debacle in which Matt Drudge released a 2008 video starring Rick Santorum speaking at a church about Satan’s spiritual assault on the United States, Santorum began to right the ship by hitting precisely the right note on Obama’s foreign policy.

Here’s the transcript, in relevant part:

When someone was in trouble, when forces of evil were moving – and yes, there are forces of evil in the world – when forces of evil are moving, America would stand up and call evil by its name … We have a president who sees America as a country, as he traveled around the world on his first tour, that he has to apologize for. That he has to say that we have done great wrongs. And if you look at his foreign policy, it is consistent with that apology. Every single ally of the United States, at one point or another, this president has turned his back on. Every single one. Every single enemy he has in one way or another appeased.

This is Santorum at his finest.

The overtly religious language is gone – we can all agree that evil is a force in the world, and that it must be fought. And Santorum crystallizes the conflict between the Obama administration’s appeasement and the American past, rooted in fighting evil.

Santorum needs to stick to this messaging and get beyond the Satan-talk in the debate tonight. He must shift the discussion from theological arguments about evil to political ones. And he made a wonderful first step today by doing just that.
