Update (5 p.m. CDT): The website appears to have been restored.

The Chicago Police Department website is currently offline due to an apparent hacking. A few days ago a Second City Cop reported about a “virus warning” that has been appearing on department computers lately.

Second City also includes an email in their report that they received:

NATO protesters have infiltrated the CPD computers with a worm that is wreaking havoc across the board. 35th Street and OEMC are in a full panic. The entire Department Intranet is in danger of a meltdown on an unimaginable scale, just in time for a potential "mass arrest" situation this weekend that would bring the Department to a grinding halt.

Tweeters are claiming that Anonymous is claiming responsibility for the cyber attack against the department:

On Friday, Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy told reporters that CPD computers have not been hacked, and there wasn’t any information anything was going to happen.

As of 11:34 am CST Sunday, the department website loaded once, and not a second time, after attempting to visit the site. So it still doesn’t appear to be working properly--or it is working intermittently at best.
