This week, Tanya Dixon-Neely, teacher of social studies at North Rowan High School, was suspended after tape was released showing her berating a student for daring to criticize President Obama. But that’s not going to solve North Rowan High’s ills. Bias in politics leads to rotten education, and North Rowan High’s statistics show that it falls far behind the state average in teaching civics and economics, as well as U.S. history.
According to North Carolina’s Education First Report Cards, as Red Alert Politics reports, the school underperforms across the board in terms of percentage of student scores at or above grade level. But its single biggest gap with state standards is in U.S. history, where just 52.5 percent of students are at or above grade level, compared with 81.5 percent of students statewide. In civics and economics, just 64.5 percent of students are at or above grade level, as opposed to 80 percent of students statewide.
Teaching bias and ignorance doesn’t account for the entirety of this gap, of course; there are socioeconomic issues that come into play. But there’s no doubt that it’s difficult to learn history, civics and economics when teachers suggest that asking questions about the president of the United States is a criminal offense.
