Reporters Ruffle Jay Carney Over Soptic Ad

Jay Carney tried to dance his way through the minefield created by the Priorities USA ad which called Mitt Romney a murderer. The Obama campaign created a bigger mess when it tried to contain the damage, with its spokeswoman and deputy campaign manager contradicting themselves at every turn. From today's presser:

REPORTER: Don't you at some point have to say something to make this go away? I mean this is the fourth day that you've gotten questions on this.

CARNEY: We cannot, we do not control third party ads.

As the President's press secretary, Jay Carney should really know what the President's campaign is doing with Bill Burton's superPAC. At the very least, the appearance of impropriety with suspiciously similar ads raises questions. Carney expects the White House Press Corps to believe he wasn't aware that his boss's deputy campaign manager organized a conference call with the star of Priorities USA's shameful ad?

The furor caused by the scandal has caused Obama's approval ratings to slide. When the President begins taking questions from the press pool once again, maybe we'll hear whether or not Obama disapproves of such shameless lies.

All of these gains are nominal, you understand, but for terrified American policy makers and investors, nominal is just fine.
