From Maine to North Carolina, photos show the east coast devastation caused by superstorm Sandy on Monday. Citizens faced destruction from fire, flooding, and heavy winds. Millions lost power, including New York hospitals which had to evacuate patients after their generators failed.

Here we see the storm primarily affecting New York and New Jersey. Other states shown include Maine, Connecticut, Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and West Virginia. With two exceptions, all images are from the Associated Press, Agence-France Press, and Reuters.
