Durbin: Rice Will Be Secretary of State

Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) is offering his heartfelt prediction that U.N. ambassador Susan Rice will be confirmed as the next Secretary of state. The Illinois senator is famous for comparing U.S. treatment of prisoners at Guantanamo Bay to Nazis, the Soviet Gulag and the murderous Pol Pot regime in Cambodia.

I do believe so … At the end, some of the criticisms against her have been unwarranted. Many have gone just too far. There's really a basic feeling of fairness. She's an extraordinary person. She's certainly well-educated and has really served our nation well as ambassador to the United Nations.

All in one breath Durbin says she’s an extraordinary person. This is the same woman who nixed our chance to get Osama Bin Laden before 9/11. She’s well-educated -- just like her boss, she thinks like a Chicago thug; Rice has said “people know not to mess with me. And if they haven’t learned, and they try, then they will learn.” And she has served her nation well at the UN, although here are 30 ways she has wrecked the U.S. at the UN.

Durbin may be right; Rice may be confirmed. But it sure as hell isn’t for one good reason.

All of these gains are nominal, you understand, but for terrified American policy makers and investors, nominal is just fine.
