Anna Wintour, Vogue editor, has withdrawn her name from the cadre of hopefuls pining for ambassadorships. Over 300 ambassador wannabees are being considered for roughly 30 openings, but Wintour, who had hotly desired the ambassadorship to Great Britain, found out that her multiyear contract with the publisher of Vogue, Conde Nast, would penalize her financially if she left her job before her contract was up.
Wintour was a major fundraiser for Obama in 2012, but once it leaked out that Obama’s top fundraiser, Matthew Barzun, would get the British post, Wintour withdrew her name from those considered for other posts. A spokesman for Wintour tried to put the best face on her withdrawal, saying, “she was happy with her job at Vogue.”
Of course, ambassadorships aren’t exactly what they used to be; as fashion designer extraordinaire Oscar de la Renta, a close buddy of Wintour’s, said: “When you are editor in chief of an extremely successful magazine, you don’t need an ambassadorship for four years. Ambassadors were great in the 18th century. Today, it’s going to the opening of a cafeteria.”
