39 Senators Already Lined Up Against the Manchin-Toomey 'Compromise'

As the Manchin-Toomey background check 'compromise' moves toward a scheduled April 18 vote, 39 Senators have already said they will be voting against it.

This 39 opposed to the compromise includes eight of the 16 GOP Senators who voted to bring the bill to the floor for a vote instead of supporting a filibuster.

With this, "the pool of potential Republicans that Democrats will need to pass the measure through the Senate has dwindled."

Speaking from the Senate floor on April 15, Sens. Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Pat Toomey (R-PA) tried to persuade fellow Senators to support the measure. Manchin said, "This is America. This is about can we make a difference, can we change something."

During an April 14 appearance on Face the Nation, Manchin admitted his gun control bill would not have prevented the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary.
