Report: 3 Out of 4 Detroit Schools Failing
According to Excellent Schools Detroit, a coalition of community, education and philanthropic groups, three out of four schools in Detroit don’t provide decent education. The organization reported that of 204 graded schools, just 51 received a C+ or higher on their scorecard. “Detroit’s been waiting for this moment to fully understand how our schools rank, not just against each other, but in measuring up to established excellence standards,” said ESD’s CEO, Dan Varner. “Right now, 25 percent of our schools are going to help our children succeed. Now we need to bring everyone else up to that level. The bar has been set.”
The scorecard included both public and private schools, as well as charter schools. The grades took into account student scores and student progress, educational climate, and parental feelings about their schools.
