4 Charged Without Bond in Mass Shooting of 13 in Chicago Park
Police have taken four black males in their 20’s into custody in relation to last Thursday night’s mass shooting, that left 13 people wounded on a south side basketball court, including a three-year old boy who was shot in the head. The boy is recovering but will need more surgery. All four of the men in custody have been denied bond, and admit to playing a role in the shooting.
The Chicago Tribune reports, two of the men, Byron Champ, 21, and Tabari Young, 22, allegedly fired into the park, because they believed it was rival gang territory.
According to the Trib, Champ is a Black P Stone gang member and was wounded in a shooting by rival members of the Gangster Disciples. Champ was also convicted in 2012 for unlawful use of a weapon by a felon and sentenced to boot camp at the Cook County Department of Corrections.
McCarthy said, "If Champ is not on the street, as he should not have been, this incident does not occur,” and continued to call for stiffer gun control laws. Emanuel also echoed more gun control rhetoric, calling for a three-year minimum sentence for illegally carrying a gun.
Garry McCarthy said the shooting was sparked after Champ was “grazed” by a bullet earlier in the day. "When Mr. Champ was shot, he believed a rival gang controlled the park and that's where they went." Champ and Young did not target anyone in particular but "just shot into the park," McCarthy said.
Kewane Gatewood, 20, allegedly provided the "AK-47 rifle" used by Champ in the shooting and Brad Jett, 22, acted as a lookout.
Breitbart News has received second hand reports from a witness on the scene that corroborate McCarthy’s description of the actual shooting.
A south side resident told Breitbart that a witness described the shooter pointing the gun down toward the ground and just began shooting randomly. Because the gunman was aiming downward, all of the victims were shot below the waist, suffering non-deadly injuries. This also explains how a bullet hit three-year old Deonta Howard in the head, due to his shorter height.
