Colo Springs Man Mistakes Stepdaughter for Burglar: Shoots, Kills Her

On December 23 Colorado Springs resident 2nd Lt. Daniel Meade shot and killed his 14-year old stepdaughter after allegedly mistaking her for burglar.

Meade shot his stepdaughter “just before 6 a.m.”

According to Mail Online, a police dispatch recording indicates the 14-year old “may have been trying to sneak into the house through a basement window after a night out.”

Mail Online also reported that “Colorado residents are allowed to own guns” and that they can legally use those guns to defend their lives under the “Make My Day,” which was put in place in 1985.

No charges have been filed against Meade at this point, and he may not face charges at all if it was a case of Mistaken Identity. Police are continuing their investigation and will then hand the district attorney’s office their recommendation for what charges, if any, ought to be filed. The decision to file charges ultimately rests with the district attorney.
