Boston Bans Smoking at All Parks and Recreation Properties

BOSTON, Dec. 30 (UPI) --
Boston's Parks and Recreation Commission Monday voted unanimously to adopt a smoking ban in all city parks that goes into effect immediately.

The amendment, proposed in November by Mayor Tom Menino, prohibits smoking tobacco, marijuana or any other substances in areas controlled by the city's Parks and Recreation Department, WBZ-TV, Boston, reported. Violators will be fined $250.

"This amendment is necessary to maintain the health and safety of our public parks and ensure that these valuable resources can be enjoyed by all Boston residents," Menino said.
