Poll: Half Think Minimum Wage Kills Jobs, 71% Want Minimum Wage
On Wednesday, Quinnipiac University released a new poll which showed that while half of Americans believe an increase in the minimum wage will kill jobs, a vast majority of the American people want the minimum wage increased. Overall, 71 percent of Americans support an increase in the minimum wage, as opposed to 27 percent who do not; 33 percent want it raised from its current rate of $7.25 per hour to $10.10 per hour, with another 18 percent wanting it raised higher than $10.10 per hour. Incredibly, a 52 percent majority of Republicans support raising minimum wage.
A large majority of Americans also support extending unemployment benefits, although Republicans are opposed to that plan by a 54-42 percent margin. A plurality of voters said that the vote on extending unemployment benefits would have no impact on how they planned to vote in the 2014 election.
