Sex Study: New Mexico Lovers Take It Slow, Alaskans Sprint to Finish

A study found New Mexico lovers' average duration of sex (7:01 min) is five times longer than their Alaskan counterparts (1:21 min). “The Land of Enchantment” ranks number one on the list of states for taking it slow during sex, while the “Land of the Midnight Sun” speeds things up to capture the bottom ranking of all states plus the District of Columbia.

According to a non-scientific study conducted by Nerve, an online magazine devoted to love, sex, entertainment, and lifestyle, the statistics were derived by using Spreadsheets, a sex activity app that "tracks your performance between the sheets." The study demonstrates that Americans don’t spend a lot of time in bed with their partners and can pretty much take care of business during the commercial breaks, or while re-booting your laptop if you prefer.

It’s not easy to determine any general pattern as you look at the rankings. One possible theory might be that the colder the state the shorter the romp, with Alaska, South Dakota, Vermont, and Montana, all cold states, bottoming in the rankings. Perhaps it’s too cold to keep your clothes off for very long. Yet Idaho, Michigan, and Nebraska – also considered cold states – are all in the top ten for longevity, so that throws that theory out the window.

Could longer lovemaking be determined by a state's slogan or reputation? While the slogan reads "Virginia is for lovers," the “Mother of Presidents” only ranks number 37, with a duration of 2 minutes 23 seconds. And supposedly hip states like New York, California, and Florida all came in with middle-of-the-pack rankings of 23, 32 and 34 respectively.

At any rate, there may be rhyme and reason to the rankings, but at this point in time more analysis needs to be done. Below are the rankings by state with the time of duration for sexual activity in parenthesis:
