The Tea Party Patriots Citizen Fund is officially endorsing California 7th Congressional District Republican candidate Igor Birman in what is shaping up to be a significant 2014 race.
Birman was the top aide for Rep. Tom McClintock (R-CA), a conservative stalwart in California, and is now running his own race against Rep. Ami Bera (D-CA) and two other Republicans. His chief GOP opponent is former Rep. Doug Ose, a moderate who tried to defeat McClintock in a 2008 primary.
Tea Party Patriots’ Chairman Jenny Beth Martin said in a statement that she is “honored” to endorse Birman.
Martin said, “Not only is Igor a strong advocate for fiscal responsibility, limited government and individual liberty, but his personal story and perspective on what it means to live in freedom make him the ideal candidate for Congress.”
Birman grew up in the former Soviet Union and immigrated with his family to the United States from Russia in 1994. He said that the day he became a citizen was one of the proudest of his life.
“Igor’s passion for what it means to be an American, free to pursue the American Dream, should inspire us all,” said Martin. “Look at all he’s accomplished in his short time in this country; his burning desire to protect freedom for future generations is something all Americans should emulate.”
Birman said in an interview with Breitbart News, “My parents risked their lives to get me and my brother out of the collapsed Soviet Union. I mean they exhibited an incredible degree of courage that I respect to no extent.”
He said that “the problem in America is that we’ve taken our freedoms for granted for much too long. Ronald Reagan was right that freedom is not ours by inheritance, we have to fight for it.”
The 7th District–which includes parts of Sacramento, Elk Grove, and Rancho Cordova–is a key political battleground in the state of California and is considered a “toss up” by many political analysts.
