This week, we found out that being the CEO of a major tech company has certain job requirements: decades of experience in the field, a brilliant contribution to the internet programming world, a stellar record of interpersonal relationships with people in all walks of life, and a personal view that same-sex marriages should be approved by the government. Have the first three and not the last? You’ll be outed, shamed, and ousted.
It is now obvious that in America, the left and the media will celebrate as you are shamed and paraded through the streets in stocks if you do not approve same-sex marriage. They believe that the right to privacy somehow covers government approval of same-sex marriage, but not writing a check to back a campaign against that approval.
Engage in business in any aspect of American society, and you may be subject not only to the dictates of government, but to the job-killing hatred of the mob.
So, is there any job left in America in which it is safe to abide by your religious views against same-sex marriage?
CEO: You’re the “face of the company.” Sure, the check you signed was personal. Sure, you didn’t use any company funds, have always abided by the non-discrimination rules of your company, and have never once been criticized for unfair treatment of homosexuals. That doesn’t matter. A lot of people don’t like what you have to say. So you’ll step down. You’ll step down right quick. Because TOLERANCE!!!1!
Nun: So, you represent an institution that has for thousands of years considered homosexuality a sin. You tell children at a school for that religious institution that homosexual relationships are not as valuable for the production and raising of children as heterosexual relationships. You paraphrase the Bible and the Universal Catechism of the Catholic Church. Well, now you’re busted. Hundreds of parents will show up to protest you and scream at you. The head of your institution will apologize for your failure to abide by politically correct areligious notions about homosexuality. (And eventually, the government will threaten to remove your non-profit status.) Because DIVERSITY!!!1!
Baker: You’ve worked hard to open up your own company. And you work just as hard to live out your Biblical values on a daily basis, in accordance with your religion. But that’s not good enough. One day, a gay couple comes in and demands that you create a cake for their same-sex wedding. You refuse, because you believe same-sex marriage is wrong. In fact, you explain, “”I’ll make you birthday cakes, shower cakes, sell you cookies and brownies, I just don’t make cakes for same-sex weddings.” That’s when the government steps in and prosecutes you for failing to provide a cake for the gay nuptials. Because MULTICULTURALISM!!!1!
Florist: It’s always been your dream to own a flower shop. All you want is to be left alone to pursue your dream without fear of your religious freedom being infringed. That means you don’t want to cater to a same-sex wedding. You’re happy to provide flowers to gays and lesbians – in fact, two of your decade-long clients are gay – but when they show up demanding that you service their gay wedding, you politely refuse. You explain, “You have to make a stand somewhere in your life on what you believe and what you don’t believe. It was just a time I had to take a stand … and everybody will have to come to that same time in their business.” The government comes after you, and shuts down your business. Because NO H8!!!1!
Photographer: You don’t want much out of life – you want to help people achieve their dreams by photographing their most important events. You also happen to be a religious person, and therefore oppose same-sex marriage. And so you determine that you will not service such weddings, since to participate in them would be to legitimize sin. Too bad. You’ll be sued by the government. Because DISCRIMINATION!!!1!
On Friday night, HBO’s Bill Maher – a major advocate for same-sex marriage himself – stated, “I think there is a gay mafia. I think if you cross them, you do get whacked.” Similarly, gay columnist Andrew Sullivan has stated, “If this is the gay rights movement today – hounding our opponents with a fanaticism more like the religious right than anyone else – then count me out.” Whether it is boycotts or the use of government means to shut down their opposition, the militant gay movement now has the upper hand in America. Conservatives can fight back on a market level, but with the advent of state-approved same-sex marriage, there is little question that the government will become (and is already becoming) the chief tool in destroying the lives of religious Americans who wish to live out their religions throughout their day.
So, what sort of job can you hold in America in which it is safe to hold the personal conviction that same-sex marriage is wrong? The answer: there is no such job. Except Democratic presidential candidate in 2008. Then you’re fine.
