Patriot Groups Aim to End Common Core with Letter to Governors

On Monday, Emmett McGroarty, Education Director of the American Principles Project, along with other concerned Americans, will be requesting in a letter addressed to the Chairman of the National Governors Association (NGA) an end to the Common Core education project.

Appearing on Breitbart News Sunday with host Stephen K. Bannon on Sirius XM Patriot Radio channel 125, McGroarty claimed that the NGA, chaired by Governor Mary Fallin of Oklahoma, to a great extent owns and propagated the national K-12 standards systems. McGroarty asserts that the Common Core system is of “poor quality,” and the NGA and its partners drafted the Common Core standards through a non-transparent and unprofessional development process.

Specifically, Common Core is a completely untested system and in most cases did not include the input of parents, teachers, or college mathematics and engineering consultants. The letter states that Common Core system’s math standards “lock the children into a defective education, one that does not prepare children for studies in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) or for admission to competitive public and private universities.”

McGroarty’s organization, the American Principles Project, is dedicated to bringing the educational system in line with the founding principles of America. He told Mr. Bannon that Common Core is “a plan conceived by private interests. It was developed by private interests through a private process.”

According to McGroarty, the NGA came to the realization that “if you can get the federal executive branch on board with a plan, then you can get it pushed into the states with the federal executive branch offering the possibility of money or relief from federal regulations. This creates an end run around the people.” The bottom line is, by getting the federal government involved in the process, the states did not have to get approval by the people, yet they still became entitled to federal funding.

Appearing on the show with Bannon and McGroarty was Breitbart News contributor Dr. Susan Berry. She explained that there has been no research done on Common Core, and advocates have simply pushed these standards, not knowing if they have any merit. She claims that “They are pushing this system down the throats of Americans. There has been absolutely no research done on Common Core.”

McGroarty further explained that many of the states signed on to Common Core, even though they didn’t know if it was a good program, because by doing so they were entitled to the “Race to the Top” funds made available by the Obama administration. But what is even more disturbing to McGroarty is that the promoters of Common Core didn’t let the people in on the process, which is antithetical to what the Founding Fathers envisioned for America.
