GOP Congressional Candidate Carries a Gun Because of Gabby Giffords

Iowa State Senator Brad Zaun (R-Urbandale) is in the primary race for U.S. Congress and says he often carries “a 9mm handgun” with him because of the attack on Gabrielle Giffords.

He said he even carries the gun to the Iowa Statehouse, although he is being forced to change that practice due to regulations on carrying in the Capitol.

According to The Des Moines Register, Zaun said “several of his colleagues in the Iowa House and Senate… also carry firearms in their respective chambers.” He said the “assault that occurred in January 2011, where then-Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ) was shot in the head at a Tucson supermarket” convinced him to keep a gun by his side.

Regarding this decision, Zaun said, “I went through all the lawful procedures that were required of me [to able to carry a gun]. I am going to defend myself if someone attacks me, and I have a right to do that.”
