'Alarming' Number Of Immigrant Moms Bringing Children Across Border Into Texas

An “alarming” number of immigrant moms are bringing their children across the border, and as they do, they are finding shelter and applause from churches like Sacred Heart Catholic Church in McAllen, TX.

According to USA Today, some of the women are pregnant, “most” are young and “all of them” have children.

The women are following a pattern similar to that taken by illegal, unaccompanied minors entering the U.S.–they enter the country illegally, “then turn themselves in to the nearest Border Patrol unit.” The mothers benefit from a process where they “are arrested but then typically are released until their court hearing.” And although the mothers “can…be immediately deported by Border Patrol,” such deportation is “a [rare] occurrence.”

On July 3 Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) “told a U.S. House field hearing in McAllen that the government needs to get tougher on recent arrivals and provide more resources to secure the border, including deploying 1,000 National Guard troops to secure the border.”

Perry said the administration’s practice of allowing illegal immigrants “to remain will only encourage the next group of individuals to undertake…[the] dangerous and life-threatening journey” to the U.S.
