On July 7 Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy said the ongoing gang violence in Chicago is due to “lax state and federal gun laws.”
According to CNN, 60 people were shot and 9 killed in Chicago during the long July Fourth weekend.
There were “24 shooting incidents on [July 6] alone.”
McCarthy said:
Everybody asks me what’s different about New York and Chicago. I can tell you very simply: proliferation of firearms… And something that I’ve learned over the course of the last three years, being on patrol… [with police officers] who put their lives on the line every single day, is that there’s a greater sanction for the gang members to lose that firearm from a gang than there is to go to jail.
He said that when he chased armed suspects in New York they tried to lose the gun, but in Chicago the suspects “keep the guns” and “turn on… officers.”
