University Paper Changing 88-Year-Old Name Because of Ammunition Connotation

The University of Mary Washington’s (UMW) school paper is changing its 88-year-old name from The Bullet to The Blue & Gray Press out of a desire, in part, to avoid a name which “propagated violence.”

According to the Fredericksburg Star, the school paper sent out a release to the UMW community on August 18 saying:

The editorial board felt that the paper’s name, which alludes to ammunition for an artillery weapon, propagated violence and did not honor our school’s history in a sensitive manner. The board intends to remain faithful to the history our university stands upon, and we continue to honor this history both in a respectful and meaningful way.

There were unsuccessful talks of changing the paper’s name in 1971 to reflect “opposition to the Vietnam War… on campus and among the editorial staff.”

The current change from The Bullet to The Blue & Gray Press awaits approval from the school’s Student Activities and Engagement Office.
