Chicago Violence: 2 Dead, 20 Wounded from Thursday to Sunday

Many media outlets focus on the increased rate of shootings that hit Chicago every summer weekend, but the weekdays before Friday starts are never much different. Last week, for instance, half as many were shot and killed on Thursday alone as were during the three-day weekend.

On Thursday, September 11, one man was killed and six other wounded in violence mostly connected with drugs and youth gangs.

The young man killed was a 17-year-old shot in the head in the city’s Bronzeville neighborhood. Police reported that he was a known gang member.

That was before the weekend even began and during the unseasonably cool temperatures that Chicago began to experience last week.

As Friday dawned, ringing in the weekend, and until Monday morning, the shootings and murders continued with a somewhat modest total, as Chicago weekend tolls go, with one dead and fourteen wounded.

The single man killed over the weekend was Charles Labon, 28, killed in a drive-by shooting on the city’s West Side.

Fourteen others were wounded throughout the city.

In one of the incidents, a Chicago police officer was run down by a car driven by a suspect trying to escape the scene of a drug sale.
