Report: Grimes' Pro-Gun Statements Are Canned, Background Checks on Agenda

A report based on campaign memos on Senate candidate Allison Lundergan Grimes’ (D-KY) position on guns shows that her pro-gun statements are canned, that she supports “strengthening background checks,” and has an unstated position on “closing the gun show loophole.”

The memos were obtained by The Weekly Standard, which published a report showing that the material Grimes used to prepare for an October 9 meeting with Louisville, Kentucky’s Courier Journal contained notes reminding her to “disagree with president on guns” and to specifically say she “disagrees with Obama on gun control.”

Another line in the memo reminds Grimes to say: “We shouldn’t be banning guns based on things like their grips as a bill supported by Obama tried to do.” However, Grimes has not come out against banning guns for other reasons.

The memo telling Grimes what to say about guns also stresses “strengthening our background check system” and has a heading on “closing the gun show loophole,” two things that gun control proponents Gabby Giffords and Mark Kelly have spent the last 18 months pushing for.
