CBS Preps New Female Secretary of State Drama
Looks like CBS is getting into the political drama game at a time when several projects involving former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton are heating up.
Madame Secretary, from Joan Of Arcadia creator Barbara Hall and Oscar winner Morgan Freeman, explores the personal and professional life of a maverick female Secretary of State as she drives international diplomacy, wrangles office politics and balances a complex family life. Hall is writing the project, from CBS TV Studios and Freeman’s Revelations Entertainment.
Freeman is an avid President Barack Obama supporter, an actor who shed his mostly nonpartisan stance after Obama ran for office.
The new show has no direct ties to Clinton, even though she recently stepped down as Obama's Secretary of State. The project still bears the whiff of modern politics. Any show depicting a powerful, competent female leader will likely play into the news media narrative that Clinton's ascension to the White House is all but pre-ordained.
NBC is currently developing a miniseries around Clinton's political life while CNN is developing a documentary on the very same subject.
