Writer: DC Comics Blocks Batwoman's Gay Wedding
Comic books are once more at the front of the culture war.
Two writers working on the DC Comics' title Batwoman, J.H. Williams III and W. Haden Blackman, are quitting due to editorial pressure placed on them by their superiors. One of the rules that forced their hand, the writers, say, is the edict that the comic can't show the main character in a gay wedding.
Batwoman, AKA Kate Kane, is in a relationship with her partner, police officer Maggie Sawyer. The characters are technically engaged but readers will not see any wedding in the title's colorful pages.
[We] were told emphatically no marriage can result," said Williams on Twitter.
In recent months comics readers have seen a gay marriage panel and a same-sex kiss in the pages of Archie. Over at DC Comics' rival Marvel Comics, the superhero Northstar got married to his male beau in a 2012 issue of Astonishing X-Men.
