Cecily Strong Named 'Saturday Night Live' Weekend Update Co-Anchor

In an interview with the New York Times, Saturday Night Live executive producer Lorne Michaels announced that second-year cast member Cecily Strong will join Seth Meyers on the news anchor desk when the show returns Sept. 28.

Meyers, who was the head writer of the show, will be leaving the sketch comedy series in February to take over for Jimmy Fallon on NBC’s Late Night program. Fallon will be replacing Jay Leno as The Tonight Show’s host in 2014.

Michaels said he wants Meyers to stay on SNL’s Weekend Update segment as co-anchor because Late Night doesn’t tape on Friday.

Michaels was effusive in his praise for Strong, saying, “Cecily, from the first show, was right there. She exploded.”Strong has been seen on SNL as The Girl You Wished You Hadn’t Started a Conversation With at a Party, Girlfriends Talk Show co-host Kyra; retail worker Dana, and The Other Woman.

Previous Weekend Update anchors include Chevy Chase, Dennis Miller and Amy Poehler.
