Box Office Predictions: 'Prisoners' Thrills, 'We're The Millers' Overtakes 'The Butler'

Last week, Sensei was right about Insidious 2 opening big to top the frame. His prediction on The Family was also closer than other prediction sites. Not bad.

Sensei’s weekend predictions and revenue results are as follows:

1. “Prisoners” ($21 million) – Buzz is high, and this drama has all the pedigree to win. Hugh Jackman takes on heavy material and seems comfortable with it. Look for quite an addition to his acting resume.

2. “Insidious: Chapter 2” ($15 million)  Horror films usually post big drops in their second weekend, this will do the same. Film should break the $60 million domestic mark.

3. “Battle Of The Year” ($7.4 million)– Dance films are hard to predict considering how sporadic their target audience can be. Sony is releasing this $20 million dollar project which, ironically, may break its losing streak of White House Down, After Earth, Smurfs 2, and the more recent Elysium.

4. “The Family” ($7 million) – A respectable start last week. This weekend, it should earn enough to break the $25 million mark.

5. “We’re The Millers” ($4.2 million) – I guess it was inevitable. Despite opening a week earlier, We’re The Millers has caught up to The Butler. The main reason being Butler opened well, but became very polarizing in its buzz (easily costing it any chance of reaching The Help-like box office results). Millers, on the other hand, has continued to improve in its buzz. Film looks to break the $137 million domestic mark, easily becoming Warner Bros’ third highest grossing film of 2013 (behind only Man Of Steel and The Great Gatsby).

Those are Sensei’s calls. Enjoy the weekend.
