Salma Hayek Warns Amnesty Opponents Cost of Food Would Increase 'If We All Left'

Actress Salma Hayek dedicated an award from the Congressional Hispanic Institute this week to illegal immigrant "Dreamers," and then warned opponents of comprehensive immigration reform that the cost of their food may increase if Hispanics left the country.

According to the Washington Post, Hayek dedicated her award Oct. 2 to immigrants, Hispanic woman, "especially single mothers, and to illegal immigrant "Dreamers" who came to the United States as children. Hayek said the "Dreamers" "are the true inspiration for all of us."

“If I could change one thing, it’s for people not to look at us as if we have come to this country to take, because we have come to this country and built this country in many ways,” she said of Hispanic immigrants. “I wonder if [critics of reform efforts] would be willing to pay for the price of what the food would cost if we all left.”

Hayek was presented with the Medallion of Excellence in the Arts and Entertainment. President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama canceled their scheduled appearance at the annual gala after Tuesday's federal government shutdown. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and other lawmakers in Congress attended.
