Box Office Predictions: 'Godzilla' Torches Competition, 'Captain America' Set to be Year's Champion

Box Office Predictions: 'Godzilla' Torches Competition, 'Captain America' Set to be Year's Champion

Godzilla is set to rampage, but will it be one of the Summer’s biggest hits?

Last week, Neighbors pulled the box office upset on The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Will we see any such surprises this week?

Sensei’s weekend predictions and revenue results are as follows:

 1. Godzilla ($75 million)– Film is set to demolish the box office. Thanks to a brilliant marketing campaign, buzz is sky high. Depending on word of mouth, film could easily beat this prediction and approach the $80+ million mark. Godzilla‘s rampage is ready to be one of the biggest films of the Summer.

2. Neighbors ($25 million)– Pulling the box office upset over The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was impressive, film easily posted one of the biggest openings for an R-rated project. Up next is breaking that $100 million domestic mark (a rare feat for comedies these days) in coming weeks.

3. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 ($17 million) – As predicted in Sensei’s yearly prediction column, this film has greatly disappointed. Currently the film is an astounding $47 million behind the gross of the original The Amazing Spider-Man. Ouch. With a soaring production budget and marketing costs, film could become a box office dud for the studio domestically.

4. Million Dollar Arm ($11 million) – Film is charming and looks perfect for the family audience crowd. The problem is actor Jon Hamm’s star appeal is limited, which makes a high opening highly unlikely.

5. The Other Woman ($5 million)– Close battle here with Heaven Is for Real for the fourth spot. Regardless of the result, Cameron Diaz will continue to have another box office hit on her her hands.

6. Heaven is for Real ($4.9 million)– Film will easily break the $80 million domestic mark, putting that all important milestone of $100 million within reach. Considering its surrounded by Summer blockbusters, this project continues to impress with top 10 finishes.

Special Note: Captain America: The Winter Soldier should pull in around $3 million this weekend, putting it on pace to become 2014’s top box office grosser (over The Lego Movie) as early as next week.

Those are Sensei’s calls. Have a great weekend.
