Oscar-winning film director Oliver Stone reportedly has his sights set on Shailene Woodley to play the female lead in his untitled drama about National Security Agency whistleblower Edward Snowden.
Woodley, who rose to international prominence for her portrayal as the lead heroine in the Divergent series, would star alongside Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who recently signed on to tackle the role of Snowden.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the actress has been meticulous in her approach to choosing film projects outside of the Divergent series, but will play Snowden’s girlfriend if a deal is made.
The film is based on Guardian journalist Luke Harding’s non-fiction novel titled The Snowden Files: The Inside Story of the World’s Most Wanted Man and Time of the Octopus, penned by Snowden’s Russian attorney, Anatoly Kucherena.
Harding’s book follows Snowden’s journey from Honolulu to Hong Kong, where he began leaking classified NSA documents to journalists Glenn Greenwald and Laura Poitras last summer, leading to his battle for asylum and exile in Moscow.
Kucherena’s upcoming novel recounts the lawyer’s time with Snowden while he waited in limbo, up until the Russian government granted him asylum.
Stone, who is no stranger to tackling controversial subject matter, is reportedly producing the project with longtime producing partner Moritz Boreman.
The untitled film is in preproduction in Germany and is set to start principal photography in January.
