Gov. Bob McDonnell says he has repaid a major political donor more than $124,000 in loans to the governor’s wife and a business McDonnell owns with his sister.

In a statement from McDonnell’s private legal and communications team, the governor said Tuesday the loans broke no laws. He also apologized for the embarrassment he and his family brought upon the state.

McDonnell says the repayments to Jonnie Williams include principal and interest. Williams is the chief executive of a troubled nutritional supplements maker Star Scientific.

Federal and state investigators are looking into thousands of dollars in gifts Williams gave to McDonnell and his family since the governor took office in 2010. No charges have been filed and McDonnell says he has done nothing illegal.
