Islamists Call for Sharia Law in Egypt's Constitution
The Muslim Brotherhood leadership in Egypt is calling on Egyptians to rally for Sharia law on Friday.
According to reports, those affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood are not taking an official position, but they are calling on all Egyptians to take part in Friday's demonstrations demanding Islamic law be incorporated into Egypt's coming constitution.
Muslim Brotherhood members "in the north-eastern Sharqiya government" held a rally Tuesday night in which they called on supporters to turn out Friday.
They want the draft of Egypt's new constitution to be written in such a way so that the "precepts" of Islamic law become the "only source" of Egyptian legislation.
Thus far, the writing of the constitution has been delayed by tensions between the Islamists and more liberal members of Egypt's government. And to date, liberal forces have been able to thwart attempts to enshrine Sharia law into Egyptian law.
Islamists hope Friday changes that.
