British Grant Recognition of Syrian Opposition Government

The Syrian National Coalition, the leading opposition group in Syria to Bashar al-Assad’s regime, has made a significant step towards legitimacy — recognition by the British government.

This development comes a week after France became the first western nation to recognize the newly formed opposition group.

The Syrian National Coalition for Opposition and Revolutionary Forces was formed and took prominence in the wake of Syria’s splintered opposition groups’ internal fighting. The new coalition united many of the groups in an effort to help secure international recognition and arms needed to topple the al-Assad regime.

The Syrian peoples’ resistance efforts have survived 21 months of brutal bombings and killings from the current government; over 30,000 lives have been lost.
