Former Mexican Mayor Maria Santos Gorrostieta was found dead on the side of the road. Gorrostieta previously survived two assassination attempts.
The former Mayor was reported missing on November 14. Police never heard from her and the kidnappers never made contact for ransom.
Ms. Gorrostieta was known to be fearless, taking on the drug cartels in her district of Tiquicheo. Officials in charge of the investigation believe this led to her death. The cause of death was a blow to the head, but there is evidence of torture.
In 2009 her car was shot up and she survived the attack. Her husband did not. Three months later her car was targeted again, leaving her with scars and constant pain. None of this scared her off.
"I will get up however many times God allows me to, to keep on searching, scratching, negotiating plans, projects and actions for the benefit of all of society, but in particular, for the vulnerable ones. This is who I am," she said in an interview after the second attempt.
Ms. Gorrostieta leaves behind three children.
