It's been discovered that a textbook designed for use in teaching English as a second language in the United Kingdom contains maps of the Middle East in which Israel is not labeled Israel--rather, it is labeled "Occupied Palestine."
The book, "Skills in English: Writing Level 1," is published by Garnet Education and it written by a husband and wife team, Terry and Anna Phillips.
This particular book has been highly praised and widely used by educators throughout the United Kingdom. But the map of the Middle East did not attract public attention until an English instructor, Liz Wiseman, noticed the moniker "Occupied Palestine" and brought it to the attention of the website Israel Today.
Once this happened, research on the book revealed that its authors, the Phillips, had focused their efforts on "teaching Arab learners."
