Saluting Our Fallen American Heroes

Memorial Day is one of our national holidays where the true meaning far too often gets lost in the shuffle.

To those who have lost a family member or loved one defending America’s freedom, this weekend is much more than an opportunity to attend a barbecue and enjoy a three-day weekend. In the mix of the hustle and bustle of our everyday lives, let us not forget the real reason for this weekend: those patriots who made the ultimate sacrifice during a time of war.

Throughout the history of our great nation, selfless men and women have joined the call to protect this country that we all love and fight for the freedoms that we all enjoy and sometimes take for granted. These freedoms come far too often at great cost, and we must never forget to honor the service of these heroic individuals.

At some point this weekend, take a few minutes to do some research about how many Americans have lost their lives fighting for Old Glory. When you do the math, from the Revolutionary War to the Civil War, to the World Wars, to Korea and Vietnam, and to Iraq and Afghanistan, you’ll get the idea. Defending the ideals set forth in our Declaration of Independence and Constitution has been no easy ride. Take a moment to reflect and be thankful that America’s most courageous were there when it counted. The next time you happen to be in Washington, D.C., I encourage you to spend an afternoon at Arlington National Cemetery. There you will see firsthand that the freedom you enjoy isn’t free.

As we all gather with friends and family over the course of this weekend, let’s be sure not to lose sight of why we have been given this time to reflect. Let’s remember to pray for those who have lost those they love, and for the men and women who are currently serving overseas as well as their families. We are eternally grateful to all who have worn the uniform, and honor them on this most patriotic holiday.
