Obama Appoints IG for Defense Department

President Barack Obama nominated an Inspector General for the Defense Department after 18 months of the agency not having an IG. Jon Rymer was nominated for the position of IG last Friday at the Department of Defense.

According to the Project on Government Oversight (POGO), Rymer is currently the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation’s (FDIC) IG and he has also served as the interim IG of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).  Rymer has served for over 30 years in the active and reserve components of the U.S. Army and is a graduate of the U.S. Army’s Inspector General School.

The Pentagon has recently been under scrutiny since investigations regarding orders that may have been given to personnel during the deadly attack in Benghazi, Libya as well as the recent reports of sexual misconduct in the military.

If confirmed, Rymer would be be filling a position that has remained vacant since December 24, 2011. President Obama also just nominated Steve A. Linick as State Department Inspector General. That position has been vacant for five years.
