UN Watch reports that Switzerland has nominated Jean Ziegler for election to the U.N. Human Rights Council. Mr. Ziegler is known for “co-founding, co-managing, and eventually winning” the “Moammar Qaddafi International Prize for Human Rights.”
Ziegler “served as law, sociology, and international relations professor in different universities” from 1963 to 2002.
In 2004, he was nominated for the same position to which Switzerland has nominated him. However, in 2004 his nomination was put forward by Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez.
From 2002 to 2008 he worked with the Commission of Human Rights and the Human Rights council “on the right to food.” From 2008 to 2009 and then 2009 to 2012 he was a member of the Advisory Committee of the Human Rights Council. His mandate “on the right to food was sponsored by the Cuban regime of Fidel Castro, with whom Ziegler has been extremely close.”
On an official mission to Cuba in 2007 Ziegler “hailed the Castro regime” as a government “in the vanguard of the struggle for the right to food.”
Ziegler has recently edited a book that compares Gadhafi to Rousseau. The book was distributed among U.N. delegates in 2010 to influence their votes as they reviewed Libya’s human rights record.
His close ties to Gadhafi, Chavez, and the Castro regime call his nomination to the U.N. Human Rights Council into question.
