Rand Paul Blasts Fellow Senators for Funding Egypt's Military

As the death toll in Egypt continues to rise, Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) is railing against his fellow Senators for continuing to fund the Egyptian military.

According to Foreign Policy, Paul said: “This is something that those who voted in Congress are going to have to live with. The question is: How does their conscience feel now as they see photographs of tanks rolling over Egyptian civilians?”

Two weeks ago, Paul offered an amendment to freeze aid to Egypt, but it was defeated 86 to 13.

Senator John McCain (R-AZ) led the charge against Paul’s amendment by claiming, “It would be a terrific mistake for the United States to send a message to Egypt: ‘You’re on your own.'”

McCain urged his fellow Senators to “table the Paul amendment,” and they did.

Paul said the idea that sending military hardware and materials to Egypt somehow endears us to the Egyptian people or they to us is outrageous: “For those who think more weapons is engaging us with the Egyptian people, ask an Egyptian. When you’re protesting in the streets and you’re run over by an American tank, you’re not going to be appreciative of American engagement.”
