Egyptian security forces stormed al-Fatah mosque in Cairo on Saturday in which hundreds of supporters of former President Mohamed Morsi had taken refuge from police and anti-Muslim Brotherhood vigilantes.
Egypt’s state news agency, MENA, claimed that Islamist gunmen had opened fire on security forces from within the mosque, prompting soldiers to besiege the building and open fire on those inside. However, reporters at the scene told the Wall Street Journal they saw no evidence of weapons within the mosque.
Video recorded within the building showed demonstrators, many of them wounded, along with the bodies of protesters seemingly killed by gunfire within the mosque and the entrances to the mosque barricaded against the Egyptian troops outside.
Muslim Brotherhood supporters who had been promised safe passage by police for leaving the mosque earlier were reportedly attacked and killed by anti-Morsi vigilante groups once they left the protection of the structure.
