Kerry: 'Can't Contemplate' Congress Wouldn't Give Obama Authorization

On Fox News Sunday, Secretary of State John Kerry said he could not contemplate that Congress would not give President Barack Obama authorization to use military force against Syria.

“I don’t believe that’s going to happen,” Kerry said, saying he felt the Congress of the United States would not turn its back on Israel, Turkey, Jordan, and “innocent Syrian civilians.”

“I can’t contemplate that Congress would turn its back on all of this responsibility,” Kerry said, implying that doing so would give “impunity to a ruthless dictator.”

“I think this is a smart decision by the president,” Kerry said, noting Obama was not trying to “create an imperial presidency.” Kerry added. “I believe that in the end, Congress will do what is right.”
