Ariel Sharon in 'Grave' Condition: Doctors

The Associated Press reports that former Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, who was incapacitated by a series of strokes in the winter of 2005-6 and has been comatose ever since, is in a "grave" condition.

The Sharon family has been called to his bedside, according to reports. The former political leader and general is one of the last major political figures still alive from the generation that fought for Israeli independence. President Shimon Peres--Sharon's left-wing ideological opponent for much of his career--is one of the others.

At the time of his illness, Sharon had just led Israel through its "disengagement" from Gaza--a move that would strengthen Israel's diplomatic position but which led to increased terrorism and two subsequent wars.
