The U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) today identified the U.S. soldier who was killed in a Taliban attack on a military base in southern Afghanistan on Jan. 20.
The DOD reported that 42-year old U.S. Army Chief Warrant Officer Edward Balli of Monterey, CA died Jan. 20 in the southern Afghanistan province of Kandahar “of wounds from small arms fire when he was attacked by insurgents.”
Balli was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 2nd Cavalry Regiment, U.S. Army Europe, Vilseck, Germany.
On Jan. 20, nine Taliban militants, wearing coalition uniforms, attacked a U.S.-led military base in Kandahar province with suicide bombs and small arms fire. All nine insurgents were killed during the attack. Kandahar is the birthplace of the Taliban.
