Ukraine Oligarch Dmytro Firtash Arrested in Vienna

Dmytro Firtash, one of Ukraine’s billionaires, was arrested in Austria on an American arrest warrant. The FBI has been investigating him since 2006 for bribery and other charges.

According to the Austrian press, Firtash was arrested in Vienna near his residence. The FBI said he helped create an organized crime group and the arrest has nothing to do with the recent events in Ukraine and Russia.

“With years of investigation by the FBI and a U.S. arrest warrant of a U.S. Federal District Court, the Vienna public prosecutor issued a national arrest order against the contractor,” [Federal Criminal Police spokesman Mario] Hejl said. Firtash have bodyguards had here, the arrest was carried out but without incident.

Firtash made his money in chemicals and gas and has connections to Russian crime boss Semyon Moglievich. He allegedly needed permission from Moglievich to do any business in Ukraine in the 1990s. Firtash was also named in the documents WikiLeaks published in 2010.
